Six riding days across the Himalayas. Guwahati to Dirang, up through Sela Pass to Tawang, out to the China border, and back through Shergaon on a road most riders never take.
The road from Guwahati to Tawang is a sequence of hairpin bends, river crossings, cloud passes, and mountain walls that change altitude faster than your body can register. Riding it — rather than sitting in a car through it — is the difference between watching a film and being in it. The return through Shergaon is intentional: one of the most beautiful roads in the northeast, and almost nobody takes it. We do.
5:00AM departure from Guwahati — you want the road before the trucks do. The ride climbs from Assam's flat plains through the ILP checkpoint at Bhalukpong, then into Arunachal via Bomdila for fuel, arriving Dirang by 4:30PM.
Dirang rewards riders who stop. Sangti Valley — 14km from town — is a wide meadow between steep hills with apple and kiwi orchards. The sulphur-rich hot spring is a legitimate recovery stop.
The climb to Sela Pass at 13,700ft — one of the most photographed passes in India — followed by Jang/Nuranang Falls on the descent into Tawang.
A local-ride day around Tawang itself — the monastery, the war memorial, and time in the markets before tomorrow's push to the border.
A ride out to Bumla Pass on the India-China border (subject to army clearance), or PTSO Lake's high-altitude calm if the pass is closed. Either way, Tawang's most dramatic riding day.
Forest mountain roads and river crossings on the way to Shergaon — a Sherdukpen tribal village that won India's Best Rural Tourism Village award in 2023, and still sees almost no tourist footfall. Homestay with a local family.
The final descent from Shergaon through the Bhalukpong checkpoint back to the plains. Arrive Guwahati by afternoon, trip odometer reading roughly 780km, and a group dinner to close it out.
Royal Enfield Himalayan, RE Classic 350/500, KTM Adventure 390, Bajaj Dominar 400. Sela Pass at 13,700ft requires strong mid-range power on switchbacks — this isn't a first-bike trip. Confidence with ghat roads, rain and gravel sections is essential.
